The Tady 45 is long recognized as the King of Surface Iron. These three chromes work great for Tuna, Yellowtail, and Bass. They come with a 3/0 cad plated treble hook and weigh 3 ozs.

Surface Iron fishing is one of the most fun ways to catch fish. It takes good eye sight and fish sense.

Surface jigs are larger, but lighter than their yoyo jig cousins. This lets them swim better at a slower retrieve rate. This slow rate is irresistible to Yellowtail, Barracuda, Bass, and Tuna.

Tackle usually consists of rods from 7' to 9' long rated 15-40# or 20-50#. High speed reels 4,5 or 6 to 1 gear ratios and line capacities of 300yards of 30 to 40# test.

The technique involves casting the lure out and retrieving at a medium or slow speed. Each surface jig is different and you must watch the jig during the retrieve to find the speed where the jig “kicks” the best.

Cast your lure near kelp beds inshore or around floating kelp “paddies” offshore. Fishing around islands and rocky areas inshore is also effective. Look for birds “picking” on the water or hovering and looking hard at one spot. These give you the best chance of hooking up.

Surface jigs are harder to cast than YoYo jigs due to their lighter weight, and take a little more use to become proficient, but once you learn you will have a blast watching the fish eat your jig!
