The Salas 6X Jr is the original yoyo jig. For Yellowtail, Tuna, Cabrilla, Grouper and Bass there is no better vertical jig than a 6XJr. They are widely fished off California and Baja.
The body of the 6XJr is 4.75in long and the jig weighs 4oz.
Yoyo fishing is a great way to catch yellowtail early season at the Coronado Islands or in Baja. It is also an effective way to fish kelp paddies offshore in the summer time for Yellowtail, Albacore and Tuna.
Tackle usually consists of rods from 6' to 7' long rated 20-50# or 30-80#. High speed reels 4,5 or 6 to 1 gear ratios and line capacities of 300yards of 30 to 50# test.
Around the islands or shoreline find a reef that is holding fish and drop your lure to the bottom. Immediately lift your jig off the bottom to keep from getting hung up. Start your retrieve and wind fast all the way to the top. If you don't get bit, try again. Yoyo fishing can be great exercise!
If you are Chasing bird schools or fishing kelp paddies offshore, set up a drift upwind of your spot and drop your jig 100 feet or so and start your retrieve. When you feel a strike just keep winding until you can't wind any more and you're hooked up!
